Lokomat training involves a body weight support system with robot-assisted gait i.e. the Lokomat. This type of therapy is commonly known as locomotor training. Lokomat training assists a person whose ability to walk has been impaired as a result of neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, or brain injury to practise weight bearing and gait training.
Those with orthopaedic condition(s) such as hip replacements needing the extra body weight support and robot assistance may also benefit.
The exact mechanism for regaining the ability to walk is still not clear, however, it is believed that controlling the repetitive walking pattern may potentially help stimulate the brain and its neural pathways to work together to re-route signals that were interrupted by injury or illness.
Assisted gait style training is normally practised with the aid of two or more physiotherapists who manually move the patient’s legs in a walking pattern via a body weight support system. The highly labour-intensive, variable and strenuous nature of the manual method can limit the frequency and duration of the therapy.
With Lokomat training, the pattern and pace are consistent throughout the session with your body's response constantly monitored. This enables movements to be sustained over longer periods of time increasing the efficiency of gait training. This can make your sessions more time efficient and allow extra time for other therapies, exercise or personal time to help you reach your goals.
In addition to training the brain and its neural pathways, a body weight support system along with Lokomat training may also help strengthen muscles, increase range of motion and improve circulation to the affected lower limbs. The weight bearing nature of the exercise may also help to reduce or delay the onset of osteoporosis due to lack of use.
Please note a thorough screening and assessment is completed before a client is deemed suitable for this form of therapy.
